GRATEFUL

Grateful

It’s funny how ungrateful I can be sometimes (well, it’s not really funny), I am not happy today. I have been whining about how far my place is from work, how bad the road is, how tired I am of eating ugali and rice, blah blah blah… As I am walking across the  Jomo Kenyatta sports ground, I come across a guy. He may be in his early twenties, he has polythene bags with various food inside and its obvious he  has picked them from the garbage. He seemed happy as he sorts out the food and eats them slowly.” Madam, karibu tule’, he tells me as I approach him. I smile , say thank you and walk past him. I can’t help but feel guilty. This guy  is grateful that he had something to eat this morning. He probably starved yesterday and I am here whining !  I wish I had  a coin or food to help him out.

I feel sorry for myself for not being thankful to God for all the opportunities he has granted me. I never lack food, even when I’m broke, i have a roof over my head, I am able to pay my bills and also extend a helping hand once in a while. Today God showed me that it is not wise to keep on complaining.

I have decided to look at life differently. According to A.J. Jacobs, When you’re thanking God for every little you have – every meal, every time you wake up, every time you take a sip of water – you can’t help but be more thankful for life itself, for the unlikely and miraculous fact that you exist at all.

I remember a hymn I loved way back in high school,

‘”When upon life billows you are tempest-tossed, when you are discouraged thinking all is lost. count your many blessings name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the Lord has done…..”

I ask God to forgive me for not seeing what He has done for me. I thank him for the gift of Family, friends, colleagues, good neighbors, divine protection, good health and prosperity. Thank you God!

I pray that God gives me  a heart to always have other people’s interest at heart,  to be  able to help someone in need and use all I have to glorify the name of the Lord. I pray for a grateful heart to always thank God even during difficult times.
